You are looking at player number 21 of the Conrose Park team. He grabbed a walk to get on first and may be seen in the right of the image as he checks out the field position of the defense. A few seconds later he is off and running, leaving a little dust whirlwind in his wake as he turns on the jets and steals second and thereby avoids the potential forced out double play.
I love that little cloud of dust. The dude hanging back by the bag on the right side of the picture cannot figure out where the runner is headed going that fast. The first baseman is totally clueless and has no idea in that in exactly 3.6 milliseconds number 21 for Conrose will be zipping by at the speed of a freight train, no stopping him now, as he hurtles toward the safety of second.
I like this picture. Do not remember the year but suspect it was 1993. We spent some time after this at batting practice on one of the diamonds in the Common. I’d lob them in slow and easy and you would smack them hard to the outfield. You had the easy job. I had to play go fetch. Later that evening we walked downtown to see the opening of the original Jurassic Park.
I thought it was scary.
You thought it was cool.
